Intaglio Print. 1993.
This was a project to make an Intaglio print in the Fine Art printing section of the one year BTEC Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art and Design.
The project was to select a twentieth century art movement, then to select an object and draw several drawings of that object in the style of that particular twentieth century art movement. One of those drawings would then be used as the basis of an Intaglio print. For this project I chose Cubism and I did several drawings of my one of a pair of eighteenth century brass, single candle, candlestick holder from different viewpoints. I then cut up the drawings and rearranged most of the parts to make a single approximate A4 sized Cubist style picture. My Cubist style picture then formed the basis for my Intaglio print.
An approximate A4 sized silvered thin stiff printing card formed the printing card base for the Intaglio print. From other thin cards, some with dried PVA glue forming a surface pattern, I cut out various shapes corresponding to the shapes seen in my Cubist style picture. These cut outs were then glued onto the silvered printing card base, arranged in the same positions as seen in my Cubist style picture. Some of them I incised to make surface textures or patterns, as well as also incising the silvered printing card base. The whole was then black inked and a paper print obtained. I did several more prints using paper and cloth and also using various colours. Some of these prints were later used in the Body Adornment project in the Textile and Fashion area.
Please see my back story regarding my Body Adornment.
