Me With Jesus. 1995.
I wanted to make a painting that somehow reflected me as a Christian, but also show an eternal element to it. I therefore decided to develop a design based upon a landscape using warm primary colours with black and white, to try and show this. So basically the blue represents the sky and the heavens and my spirit. The yellow represents my soul. The red represents the earth, the dust of which my body has been formed from. The largest area is blue followed by yellow and then red in the order of spirit, soul and body. Cadmium yellow and cadmium red are used both being warm colours. Cobalt is neither warm nor cold but when placed alongside warm colours it tends towards being warm. The tapering black lines leading to the white area, which represent eternity, give a sense of depth to an otherwise flat landscape, they draw the eye to that white area and indicate me living this life moving ever closer to eternity. The tapering black lines within the white rectangle represent my journey with God throughout eternity. That is made possible by Jesus’ death and resurrection, by me surrendering to Him and being filled with the Holy Spirit.
The Divine Proportion of a third to two-thirds division of a line together with the geometric system of half to half division of a line underpins the picture and imparts structure and rhythm. The Divine Proportion and the geometric system are used in positioning and relating the white rectangular area to the outer black frame. The white rectangle is placed at the centre of a part invisible cross, the sides of which are along the lines formed by dividing up the outer black border by means of the Divine Proportion and the geometric system. The white rectangle is in what I call the super positive quadrant of the picture, perhaps apt for eternity. There are three centres to represent the triune nature of God. The geometric centre is at the centre of the picture which is located at the bottom left corner of the white rectangle which could represent Jesus, God the Son. The centre of the white rectangle, at the vanishing point of the tapering black lines could represent God the Father. The other centre is located at the top right corner of the white rectangle, positioned by means of the Divine Proportion, which could represent the Holy Spirit.
I believe that the placing and choice of colours, the determining of the centres and shapes by means of the Divine Proportion and geometry, give harmony to the composition and reflect the harmonious unity of me to God as I journey through this life and through out eternity.
