Nine. 2006.

At Abbey Gate School when I was nine years old, the art teacher decided to allow the class to paint and draw anything that we wanted. So I decided to divide a piece of paper into rectangles and triangles and to use colour to create a lively colourful pattern and also to see which colours could work well together. Unfortunately I didn’t keep my original painting. However in 2006 I had some time to revisit those boyhood ideas and in the process to refine the original concept.

The picture, bounded by a black border to show that it is a self contained composition, is divided up into a pattern of nine rectangles which are themselves divided up into thirty-six triangles with also several quadrilateral shapes. As in the original the placement of colour not only provides a lively colourful pattern but using colour theory shows how certain colours work well with each other, for example the blue, green and orange triangles within the rectangles. Black, white and purple are also used. The black balances the dark purple and the dark purple also works well with yellow and orange, according to colour theory. The white gives a focal point to the composition.

I hope to have created harmony and balance of the colours and shapes and I hope also that my composition gives the viewer visual enjoyment.
