True Unity in Diversity. 2006.
The idea for this abstract pictorial composition came from thinking about the current state of British society. I wanted to visually show what I feel British society could and should be like, the very opposite of the much vaunted multi-culturalism and government notions of diversity. It is my contention, that as a Christian, a society can only be truly united and truly function properly, that it can enjoy true harmony, life, restfulness and integration between the various diverse cultures and ethnic groups and other parts, if there is an overriding shared common set of values, stories, history, concepts and laws based upon and stemming from the God of the Bible. Thus I believe that in this society there would be true unity in diversity.
I’ve always been interested in buildings and as a boy I was struck and I still am, by the massive triangular shaped rows of the roof at the aircraft factory in Broughton, Flintshire. That triangular shaped roof gave me the idea to use triangles and variations upon that shape, for this composition, to attempt to visually represent the above notion of a diverse but unified society. The outside broad black line represents Great Britain’s border. The nation of Great Britain is shown by the white triangle which touches a gold triangle representing God, both giving a visual focal point to the picture. I have shown the make up of British society by various colours placed in different sized areas. These areas of colour not only stand for the diverse cultural and ethnic groups, but also for the different industries, arts, crafts, built up parts and geographical areas of the nation, all forming the whole body of Great Britain but distinct within that whole. The thin black lines mark out those areas but the diagonal lines coursing through the composition, I hope, create an upbeat uplifting rhythm. All of those black lines I feel also give a sense of shaping the coloured areas to make a diverse but unified pictorial composition, thereby reflecting a diverse but united society under God. I believe that this kind of society, one that is unified, positive, uplifting, harmonious, complimentary, natural, one of restfulness and cohesive integration between its diverse parts, is a society truly unified in diversity.
