My Family and Cars. 1994-1998.
Like my pictures Shakey, Slip Sliding Family and My Room, the idea for this picture came out of the, ‘A Personal World’, project which I interpreted it as, ‘My Personal World’, in the Fine Art section of the one year BTEC Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art and Design.
In my personal world, we, that is me, my brother and my Dad all own a car and I and my brother had several toy cars as boys. So I just wanted to make a visually interesting playful image to show that, based upon a triptych, as I had never used the triptych format before. I used strips of brown tape and a strip of brown paper to create the three different sized areas of the triptych, which have black and white photocopies of photographs of ourselves and a Ford Escort mark 1, a car that I used to own. To give unity to the picture I used the Ford to stand for all the cars and toy cars that we have owned. As in my picture My Room, the black and white photocopies were enlarged to A4 size and I worked into them with pastels, felt tip pens, watercolours, charcoal and coloured pencils. Everything was then carefully glued together. In 1998 to finish the composition, I mounted the picture onto a large piece of white card.
